Thank you for joining us to this article about Curiosities about parakeets Parakeets are extremely popular pets in Romania. If you don’t have one, you probably know someone who does. Or you’ve heard stories about their shenanigans. Parakeets are playful, intelligent, sociable, noisy and love human company. They are truly charming if you give them attention, constant care and adequate food.
Here are some interesting things you may not know about parakeets
- 1. Parakeets have a surprisingly high respiratory rate, up to 85 breaths per minute. Their heart rate is also extremely fast: over three hundred beats per minute.
- 2. Most parakeets are greenish-yellow in color. The other colors we see today were developed over time by breeders.
- 3. Parakeets are small but have up to 3000 feathers on their bodies.
- 4. They have a third eyelid, which you usually can’t see, but which is critical for keeping your eyes lubricated.
- 5. Parakeets can move each eye independently of the other and see independently with each eye. This is called monocular vision.
- 6. Their bones are filled with air sacs to facilitate flight.
- 7. A parakeet has more vertebrae in its neck than a human, allowing it to turn its head up to 180 degrees.
- 8. If they lose more than 10 drops of blood, it can be fatal.
- 9. Female parakeets gain weight during the breeding season, and that extra weight comes from increased bone density caused by calcium retention.
- 10. A parakeet’s eggshells are covered with tiny pores that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through.
- 11. Artificial light in our homes can disturb the reproduction of parakeets because they measure the season by the length of daylight hours with light.
- 12. Parakeets don’t have bladders. Urine and feces come out of the same hole.
- 13. A parakeet poops every 20 minutes. No wonder their cages get dirty quickly too!
- 14. These birds can remember sequences of sounds and sometimes repeat them.
- 15. Most parakeets will learn to say at least a few words. They are the most vocal pet bird species.
- 16. These little birds have brains developed enough to count to three.
- 17. Parakeets don’t just eat seeds. They need pellets, fruits and vegetables, specially prepared for their stomach to digest. Find food for parakeets on Animaluxshop.ro
- 18. Parakeets can live up to 10-15 years, but there have also been reports of them dying at the age of 29.
- 19. They are very active in the early morning and late afternoon.
- 20. They don’t like sudden changes in temperature, sleet or cold.
- 21. They need cage mates or lots of toys, including a mirror, to see themselves and think they have a companion.
- 22. In some parts of the world, parakeets are eaten by people, being considered a delicacy.
- 23. They use body language to express their moods. They have many interesting movements and gestures.
- 24. When you see them standing on one leg, it means they are relaxing.
- 25. They like monogamy and have stable relationships. When the partner dies, the parakeet suffers terribly.
- 26. When a parakeet yawns, the other parakeets in the cage yawn, just like humans do.
- 27. Parakeets love to be petted, but you have to be gentle with them.
- 28. Each bird has its own personality, you will not find two parakeets alike.
- 29. Parakeets change color when they are sick
- 30. The male parakeet has royal blue nostrils and the female has white or pale blue nostrils.
Parakeets are surprisingly interesting and complex creatures. They make great companion birds, provided you have the time to dedicate to them. If you offer them special food for parakeets, from established manufacturers as it is Versele Laga, then you will be able to communicate with them easily for many years.
