How to make a canary happy

Cum sa faci un canar fericit

Welcome to this resource about How to make a canary happy A canary is a small, bright yellow bird famous for its beautiful song. Generally it is the male who sings, but some females also do it.
The canary is a type of finch native to the Canary Islands. In nature the canary is brownish green in color and resembles a small sparrow. Canaries have been popular pets since Spanish sailors brought them home from the Canary Islands in 1478.
Today there are many breeds of pet canaries. Breeders around the world have managed to breed a canary that is very different from wild birds. They have more sophisticated trills, different colors and are more docile. Canaries are not social birds, so they will be happy to be alone.
A happy canary means a spacious and clean cage, adequate food, protection and care.

They like spacious cages

A canary can be kept in a cage, which should be large enough for it to fly. The cage should have a plastic or metal tray covered with sand to catch bird droppings. The sticks in the cage should be at different levels so that the canary can move a lot. The cage tray should be cleaned every day or every other day. The cage should be placed away from direct sunlight and drafts.
When choosing a cage, keep in mind that a long one is better than a tall, narrow one. In reality, height is not that important; the length is better to allow for a more natural flight. Try to get a cage that is at least 8 inches long. Wire cages are best, wooden and bamboo cages are too difficult to keep clean.
Near the cage it is necessary to maintain room temperature, away from drafts, air conditioners and windows that receive direct sunlight, as extreme temperatures can be harmful to the bird.

Feed the canary

Animaluxshop sells mixes specially packaged for canaries, from the Versele Laga brand. We have a wide range of daily canary foods, supplements, special bars, with all kinds of combinations. They contain the necessary ingredients for the bird to grow beautifully, with brightly colored plumage, without diseases.
Birds can also be fed fresh fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, bananas, green peppers, corn, cooked broccoli, raw spinach, raw dandelions, pears, peaches, strawberries, cucumbers, chopped hard-boiled eggs. Never feed cabbage and lettuce because they will make your bird sick. You can also occasionally offer him a pellet-based diet, although they are not as palatable as seeds. As a delicacy, sprouted seeds are excellent.
The canary should always have fresh water to drink and warm water for bathing. The cuttlefish bone should also be placed in the cage, it is used by the bird to sharpen its beak.

Be a responsible canary owner!
Canaries depend on their owners for food, protection and shelter. Before you become the owner of such a bird, think carefully about all the things you will need to do to care for it responsibly. If you leave the house, you cannot leave the canary without fresh food. If you want to get rid of it, don’t release it into the wild.
Although the small stature of canaries may make them seem like good pets for children, be careful: these birds are very fragile and easily frightened and may not do well in a home with very young children.
Most canaries are shy, timid little birds. Unlike larger bird species, they do not like to be held. They feel good in large cages where they can fly. These birds can be very territorial, so be careful if you put more than one canary in the cage, because dominant behavior can be difficult to control and can lead to an unhappy situation for the more submissive bird. You can pair them up if you want to mate them. Never cut the canary’s wings!
Canaries, like most birds, need rest and will feel better if given a light/dark cycle (simulating day and night) that approximates natural changes. Keeping them up late with artificial light is not healthy for them. It is best to cover the canary’s cage at night, when the sun sets.
If you give the bird toys, remember to place them in the cage so that they do not obstruct the flight space. The canary likes swings, mirrors, bells and hanging toys made of wood or plastic.

They also breed in captivity
Canaries can breed from the age of one year. In spring, the male canary sings and dances to attract the female for mating. About a week after mating with the male, the female begins to lay eggs in the nest. She lays one egg a day for about five days. The female incubates the eggs by keeping them warm with her body. The eggs hatch after about thirteen days. The young are born without feathers and are blind. The female feeds her young with partially digested food from the crop.
After three weeks the young canaries have feathers and can see. They can move, but they cannot fly. As they grow, new feathers appear and canaries learn to fly. A canary is considered an adult after approximately 12 months. Domestic canaries can live 10 or more years.
